Contractor league tables back up optimism in the Welsh built environment 

Optimism amongst Welsh based contractors received another boost with the latest data from Glenigan published in Construction News last week. The top 10 contractor league in Wales recovered some lost ground in the 12 months to August with combined deals rising 26.8% from the year to July to stand at £525M. Interserve moved to first place having previously been seventh – sealing nine deals and work valued at £101.9M – Morgan Sindall climbed to fourth in the table.

This represents a mix of projects, but equates to solid activity levels across the Welsh built environment and indicates work right across the supply chain. If we add to thes plans and discussions regarding Wylfa – now in public consultation – as well as the prospect of the new tidal lagoon in Swansea it is an exciting time to be working in our industry.

It is worth noting that the former Atkins chief executive Keith Clarke is the latest high-profile appointment to the firm set to build the world’s first tidal lagoon power plant in spring 2015 when he was named as non-executive chairman of Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay plc two weeks ago. This comes on the back of the former chief executive of Laing O'Rourke Austrailian Steve Hollingshead joining the £850m project as construction director in June.
