Nuclear Power on The Horizon For Anglesey?

The idea of a new nuclear power station on Anglesey, Wylfa Newydd, has been an open secret in the Welsh construction industry for some time. The prospect alone has been exciting, but if it does finally begin on site the potential for our industry is enormous. Hence it is important to ensure the project is pursued in the right manner – which for CEW means via a collaborative procurement route.

The public consultation that began last week is the first major step in the planning process for the development and will cover all aspects of Horizon’s proposals, taking in everything from construction to transport to how it might affect the Welsh language and the economy of the region. People will have the chance to input their views at public exhibitions and drop-in events across the island and North-West Wales, as well as through a dedicated website: www.horizonnuclearpower.com/consultation.

The Wylfa power station, which is proposed to begin generation in the first half of the 2020s, will bring billions of pounds of investment and thousands of jobs to the region during the construction phase. Once electricity generation begins up to 1000 people will be employed at the site, providing long-term, high-quality jobs for people from the local community.

Alan Raymant, Chief Operating Officer at Horizon, said: “This is a big step forward for a project that will contribute to the future prosperity of North Wales for many years to come. Not only will it provide direct job opportunities, it will also build and support an extensive local supply chain and inspire the region’s young people. We are really keen that everyone gets involved in our consultation and lets us know what they think of our proposals. Between now and early December we’ll be out and about talking to people across the region and this feedback will help us develop our plans further.”

As well as finding out more via the web site you can learn more about the project and Horizon’s proposals at a series of public exhibitions.

To find out more, visit the website at Horizon Nuclear Website  where you will find all the information you need to take part. You can view information about different aspects of the project, download more detailed technical documents, get details of all the events we’ll be holding across the region and complete an online feedback form.
