As the use and benefits of BIM become more widespread across the industry one of the important debates currently underway is the degree to which clients should lead on the application of BIM and how strongly should the supply chain push the agenda.

Last week CEWales and CLAW, the Consortium of Local Authorities in Wales, which includes all 22 Welsh local authorities, started to develop a BIM toolkit for clients in the Welsh public sector.
This is an important piece of work which will ensure that public sector clients across Wales are able to effectively and consistently engage with the construction industry on the application of BIM to public asset projects. It also ensures that clients take a lead in delivering BIM level 2 by 2016 as set out by both the Welsh and UK governments. 

The workshop sessions identified a number of areas where Welsh clients would deliver a constant approach including the development of Employers Information Requirement and guidance for pre-qualification questionnaires.

“Whilst supply chain organisations have been developing their own approaches to BIM and realising benefits through the design and construction stages we’ve always known that the real benefits will come to clients during the long operational phases of their assets. That’s why we’re really pleased that all 22 Welsh LA’s have shown great leadership and have come together to develop a consistent approach to BIM. This will allow the Welsh construction industry to better align themselves with their customers “requirements”.
