The SE and SW Wales Best Practice Club in association with Constructing Excellence in Wales presents:
An Exemplar Project : Gateway to the Valleys (G2V) This is your opportunity to learn how Bridgend County Borough Council, Leadbitter, Scott Brownrigg Architects and their other partners  are delivering an Exemplar project based on the core Constructing Excellence principles of collaboration, integrated teams, committed leadership and respect for people.

The project, which is still in the construction stage, will create a new 11 - 18 community college for Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen to replace two other schools within the County Borough that were both energy inefficient and not fit for purpose. It will also help to address surplus places, enable operational efficiencies to be achieved and enable greater flexibility for teaching and learning to meet the needs of pupils now and in the future.

The development is very much a community project, capitalising on the need for a new school as an opportunity to incorporate wider facilities that are not otherwise available in the community. A community ‘wing’ will form part of the school offering dedicated facilities for a range of community groups. Additionally, the scheme will operate a Combined Heat and Power system. The system is currently providing heat to the neighbouring residential  home and heat and electricity will be fed to the school.

Significant social benefits are also expected during construction through engagement with local schools, recruitment and up-skilling of economically inactive individuals and business opportunities for local suppliers.

This project was put forward as part of the Constructing Excellence in Wales Exemplar Programme so that others can learn from the actions taken by the team to deliver economic, social and environmental benefits.

Copies of the design stage case study will be available on the day and can also be accessed via this link. On completion of the project, which is anticipated in the summer of 2013, a further construction case study will be produced highlighting the hard evidence of what the project has delivered. This will be followed 12 months later with a final post-occupation case study.
