Ysgol Penrhos takes shape

Construction has started on the Exemplar project at Ysgol Penrhos, in Llanelli. A 2 form entry primary school with an additional Flying Start unit to the front of the school.

Designed to accommodate the merging of two existing primary schools, at Copperworks and Lakefield, and will be delivered, by the client, designers and site team to BREEAM Excellent.

The architects, HLM are appointed to deliver the architecture, landscape and interiors with TRJ Construction Ltd as the project contractors. Initially, Carmarthen County Council provided a sketch scheme which through collaboration HLM developed into a ‘Hub and Spoke’ design. The Hub is the main hall, kitchen and main reception whilst the spoke is the classrooms, which are predominantly repeatable.

Based upon a seriously challenging site, suffering from contaminated land, security and severe weather conditions, the team ensure a successful construction process to ultimately deliver a quality school for the 21st Century and beyond.

The team as a whole have put the school forward as an Exemplar Project under Constructing Excellence in Wales and will be looking towards the design stage event in the early Autumn this year to explain how these and other issues were overcome and the school will be Exemplar.
