Rail projects are in the news right now. HS2, HS3 and Cross rail dominate the mainstream media – but Wales will be making the headlines with the electrification of the mainline to London plus the Valleys Line improvements. So as Wales will be embarking upon one of the biggest and most important rail and infrastructure projects this century very soon we should be learning about similar schemes from around the world.
Stephen Lawrence from Mott Macdonald will be sharing his experiences of the 9.5km stretch of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line crossing the city centre of Kuala Lumpur – their own version of Cross Rail – underneath the city. Tunnelling is a complex and expensive solution to rail engineering challenges. Whilst it means less disturbance to the day to day life of the city it does mean overcoming issues such as the geology of the region, earth pressure balance and the physical operation of the tunnel boring machines not to mention the creation of seven underground stations.
It is a fascinating scheme that will have a lot of interest for architects, designers, engineers and planners across Wales with an eye on the infrastructure schemes – road and rail – scheduled for the country in the next few years.
