Construction Procurement Strategy is Launched

On Monday, Jane Hutt AM, Minister for Finance backed the launch of a new procurement strategy for the construction industry in Wales.

It has been developed by the Construction Procurement Steering Group, established by the Minister to respond to the Constructing Excellence in Wales’ No Turning Back report in late 2010. The Minister commented:

“The Strategy has been produced by the construction industry, for the construction industry. Its focus complements the Wales Procurement Policy that I published in December last year and supports my view that we can use intelligent procurement policy to deliver cost effective outcomes that also provide social, economic and environmental benefits to Wales. Balancing the need to deliver both good cost and quality outcomes in construction is key. The actions that the Strategy will deliver will support our aspirations to see the construction industry in Wales help build our way back to full economic recovery.”

The Strategy guides clients as to how public construction projects should be procured, and clarifies where possible some of the concepts involved in order to give consistent, cohesive direction to the public sector in Wales. However, the Strategy is not a Welsh Government document, but is the product of the Steering Group and is a statement of intent to work with public clients and industry to incorporate agreed Welsh procurement policy into construction projects in Wales.
