It doesn’t seem too long ago that our industry was complaining about a lack of materials. In the good times we often took a lot for granted. There was less urgency to improve processes, there was an ignorance of the impact on our environment from the waste construction generated and we cared less about how the industry interacts with local communities.
Times have changed, but one constant remains: when the industry picks up the manufacturers of our raw materials often struggle to keep up with the pace of demand. But this factor simply reinforces something we knew to be true during the good times but that we have learned the hard way that we have no choice to pursue now – we must procure collaboratively. It is common sense that if you know bricks take up to 20 days to bake and a further two weeks to cool off that your building programme must allow for a delay in the supply of materials. It takes planning.
It requires consideration; the management of expectations and a detailed plan. All of these things can also create time and space to meet sustainability targets, zero carbon, local community and design goals. And it all needs a collaborative approach.
