Enabling Zero Waste - Policy into practice

The South Wales Best Practice Club met today in Swansea to hear more about the Constructing Excellence in Wales - Enabling Zero Waste project.

CEW is working with four specially selected pilot schemes to identify ways that construction and demolition projects can generate less waste, reuse materials and use more recycled content. The aim is to establish if, and how, the construction industry can achieve the overarching strategy for waste in Wales of zero waste to landfill.

The project has also introduced the concept of BIM design which has offered a huge opportunity to design-out waste and improve the links between design and build teams

Paul Jennings, Director of Construction Waste at CEW, explained how the Enabling Zero Waste project is helping to turn “policy into practice" as the project team work with construction businesses providing real, practical support on site.

The delegates also heard from Jennifer Parker, Environmental Champion at John Weaver (Contractors) Ltd who are restoring the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea on behalf of their client the City and County of Swansea.

In her presentation Jennifer shared the challenges of an aspiring zero waste site and her advice for waste minimisation.  Following the meeting, John Weaver (Contractors) Ltd kindly hosted a site visit and Q&A session at the 1911 Gallery.

The session in Swansea reinforced the commercial value in effectively managing construction waste and the importance of having a good relationship with accredited waste management contractor.

Good practice is evident across the sector but there is still work to be done to address the small percentage of problematic wastes that cannot easily be reused or recycled.

The Enabling Zero waste project is also working with Castleoak Ltd on their Care Home at Newport development; Kier Construction on the Ice Arena Wales project in Cardiff Bay and WRW Construction Ltd at Millbank Primary School in Cardiff.
