Enabling Zero Waste Phase 3

Constructing Excellence in Wales (CEW) is working with Willmott Dixon Construction Limited and Torfaen County Borough Council as part of the Enabling Zero Waste initiative.

Enabling Zero Waste (EZW) is a CEW initiative designed to work with the construction industry to provide practical, positive and active intervention via professional waste management solutions to assist in enabling zero waste.

The initiative offers collaboration at all stages of the design, development and construction of sites providing mentoring and practical operational assistance, enabling a reduction in waste arisings and producing a detailed evidence base to demonstrate the achievability of zero waste to landfill.

Willmott Dixon has started the construction of three new primary schools in Torfaen. As part of the £15.6million project Willmott Dixon will build:

  • Blenheim Road Community Primary School – replacement on the current site, 315 pupil places
  • Ysgol Panteg – replacement of the Griffithstown and Kemys Fawr sites on a new site on Station Road, 420 pupil places
  • Llantarnam Community Primary School – replacement on the site of Llantarnam secondary school, 315 pupil places

All three primary schools are based on the same design, giving Blenheim Road and Llantarnam the potential to expand to 420 places in the future. It offers the Enabling Zero Waste (EZW) team at CEW a unique opportunity to directly compare waste production, management practices and site behaviours. The EZW team will work in collaboration with Willmott Dixon and their supply chain throughout construction to help identify any opportunities or solutions to reduce waste.

Updates will be provided as the project progresses.

Do you want to work for CEW?

Telling stories about how the best projects are completed is always great to hear and be involved with, but best practice is about more than just the projects that went well from the beginning. To learn best practice and share properly so that we all benefit we have to drill down deeper to find out how problems were overcome and then celebrate that success. That is what lies at the heart of our successful Demonstration & Exemplar Programmes.

When CEW began and evolved from the original ideas of Building the Team and Rethinking Construction the concept of demonstrating excellence and sharing the learning from a whole range of construction projects was born. That core element of our work has never stopped, never ceased in momentum and right now, the Exemplar Programme consists of almost 30 projects that represent a cumulative value of £600m comprising housing, health, highways, commercial and education sectors.

That’s a lot of best practice waiting to be shared, learned and then used to educate, inform, influence and shape future decision making.

That’s why the Demonstration & Exemplar Programme remains such a vital part of CEW work. It is also why we are looking for a new member of the CEW team to continue its success. That candidate is going to have to show a commitment to the values of best practice, collaborative working and the concept of disseminating great ideas and learning. These principles are at the heart of what we do. If you think you can demonstrate these traits and have what it takes to drive positive change in Welsh construction, then download the job description here or email Milica Kitson.

Electrifying Rails: Best Practice Clubs
CEW Best Practice Clubs are at the core of what the constructing excellence movement is all about: they are the most successful way of sharing and disseminating best practice from projects all over Wales.

The CEW Clubs are at the heart of what makes CEW such a thriving construction community, not just a movement for change. Without them, the ideas, breakfast seminras, learning and best practice gained by our great industry would not be shared and passed on to different schemes, projects and organisations.

They are also where great ideas are nurtured. So, make every effort to support them and why not start with the next breakfast even held by the South West Wales and South East Wales Best Practice Clubs looking at the ABC Electrification. David Jukes, Electrification Programme Development Director, will give an update on the electrification of the South Wales main line between Bristol and Cardiff as part of the Network Rail National Electrification Programme.

ABC Electrification is dedicated to delivering electrification projects that will help to transform the UK's railways. Founded on collaboration, innovation and agility ABC Electrification prides itself on its ethical delivery principles, ensuring that every project is delivered on time, in full and with zero harm.
Electrification will mean faster, greener, quieter and more reliable journeys for thousands of passengers. In Wales, this involves a significant construction programme to the South Wales Mainline between the Severn Tunnel and Swansea.

How to Book: To reserve your place please email CEWales Events  stating your full contact details and the names of all delegates wishing to attend. Substitution of delegates can be made at any time.
