CEW: Weekly Event Update

Every week CEWales holds seminars, workshops and gives industry stakeholders the chance to network, showcase and talk best practice – but what works best for you – read on and find out?

Last week CEWales ran two main events – Pen Y Cymoedd Wind Farm project held on the 25th September and then on 28th September we ran the first in a series of sessions educating Welsh construction professionals about regulations around Sprinkler Systems. We are holding another event today in Carmarthen and a further one in Llandudno on the 11th November and we also hope to run a further two sprinkler events in Cardiff in November. To register your interest email CEWales (dates to be confirmed)

Our first event looked at the story behind the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project. It is the the biggest wind farm development in Wales and is being completed by Jones Bros and Balfour Beatty. Once operational the project will provide a Community Fund of £1.8 million per annum for more than 20 years. This is exactly what our industry needs to deliver and become best known for. Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project is going to be the largest onshore wind scheme with a total of 76 turbines that when it is finished and operational by 2017 will generate enough electricity to power 140,000 homes. Built as a 50:50 joint venture with Balfour Beatty and Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK it is located on land managed by Natural Resources Wales within Rhondda Cynon Taf and Neath Port Talbot situated between Neath and Aberdare in South Wales.

The workshop on sprinklers advised delegates on how to meet the new regulations from 1st January 2016, when it will be a legal requirement in Wales for all new residential properties to have sprinkler systems installed (it is already a requirement for ‘high risk’ properties such as care homes). There is little detailed technical awareness in the industry of what this means in terms of design and implementation for developers, designers and consultants both during design and the delivery of the homes on site. This training seminar and one more in November  recognises the need to the construction industry in Wales to be better equipped to address the imminent legal requirement for sprinklers in all new residential properties. A ‘summary sheet’ will be available to highlight the core issues and steps that developers and design teams need to be aware of.

Feedback for both events was excellent and it was good to hear that we are providing valuable information and meeting the needs of our stakeholders.

Construction News: £400m Masterplan for Cardiff

A joint venture led by Legal & General and Rightacres seeks to create 10,000 jobs through the £400m One Central Square development in Cardiff.

Legal & General (L&G) has formed a joint venture with Cardiff-based developer, Rightacres, to deliver the city’s £400m Foster + Partners-designed Central Square masterplan.

The 12-acre site is part of Cardiff Council’s regeneration scheme and is set to create 10,000 jobs. The first phase of the project will see the 150,000 sq ft BBC Wales HQ and a 135,000 sq ft office development – One Central Square – built with completion scheduled for January 2016.

Further phases will include a mix of commercial and residential buildings.

The deal is the second to be delivered through L&G’s Regeneration Investment Organisation (RIO) partnership, which focuses on investing outside of London. L&G previously invested in a £400m regeneration scheme in East Leeds which it will develop in partnership with Scarborough Group.

Chancellor George Osborne said:  “Today we see a major vote of confidence in the Welsh economy with a new partnership between L&G and Rightacres. The £400m regeneration project which will be delivered through this partnership is fantastic news for working people across Wales and will help transform Cardiff’s city centre creating 10,000 new jobs.”

Phil Bale, leader of Cardiff City Council, commented:  “Cardiff has a long established relationship with L&G, as one of the Cardiff capital region’s major employers, and this latest news represents an exciting new chapter which clearly demonstrates their confidence in the region. Central Square is a major priority for the Council which will create a fabulous gateway to Cardiff and the rest of Wales.”

Laura Mason, Director of Direct Investment at Legal & General Capital, commented: “Cardiff has been hugely successful in establishing itself as real player in the inward investment arena and Central Square represents the most exciting regeneration scheme due to come forward in Wales.

Enabling Zero Waste – Aberystwyth Fire Station – Project Update and Site Tour

Constructing Excellence in Wales would like to invite you to a breakfast seminar, the subject of which is the Enabling Zero Waste project. Enabling Zero Waste is a CEW initiative designed to provide practical, positive and active intervention through the provision of professional waste management solutions targeted at construction, demolition and civil engineering projects in Wales. The initiative is aiming to establish, if and how, the construction industry can achieve the overarching strategy for waste in Wales of zero waste to landfill. The results will also help to inform the industry about planning to generate less waste, reusing materials and using more recycled content. Updates, lessons learnt and best practice will be disseminated across industry as the project progresses.

At the breakfast event, you will hear from WRW Construction, a project partner working with CEW on the Enabling Zero Waste scheme. Together we aim to identify improvements in waste management during the demolition and construction of Aberystwyth Fire Station. An update in relation to the scheme will be provided detailing progress, waste management challenges and highlighting examples of best practice. The event will be followed by a site tour. Participants wishing to visit the site must bring their own PPE (hard hat, hi-visibility attire and safety boots).

How to Book: To book a place at this event please email CEWales Events stating your full contact details and the names of all delegates wishing to attend. Substitution of delegates can be made at any time.

Non-attendance by any registered delegate will be charged £30 plus VAT unless you have informed us prior to the event.

In order to reduce wastage at our events CEW operates a policy of only notifying venue details when issuing registration confirmation. This ensures we only cater for delegates who have registered and don’t over order for individuals who may or may not turn up on the day.
