Sometimes the long term benefits of a collaborative approach and working through integrated teams is not always very obvious. Indeed, from a CEW team point of view, whilst we intrinsically know it makes sense and we advocate collaborative working from the outset of a scheme, our instincts need evidence to support our claims.

The Wylfa Nuclear development on Anglesey is one of the UK’s not just Wales biggest construction projects for many years. Aside from the technology involved the enormous logistics behind the scheme and the support in terms of people and ancillary buildings make it a huge opportunity to demonstrate Welsh construction best practice.

But key to its success and planning is appreciating the project requirements, which is why it was so informative to hear first hand from the GE/Horizon team about The Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) Technology and New Build Development. It was a fascinating presentation, hosted by ICE Wales Cymru North Wales Branch, which detailed the technical design of the ABWR and an update of the nuclear new build progress at the Wylfa Newydd site on Anglesey.

Llanwern High School has been one of the jewels in the crown of Welsh construction and CEW since its completion in 2012. One of the stars of the CEW Awards and an Exemplar project it is a great demonstration of the core Constructing Excellence principles of collaboration, integrated teams, committed leadership and respect for people.

The project, which was completed in 2012, has created a new community focused Secondary School which has led to increased educational performance, higher pupil intake, greater community engagement and increased regeneration of the area.
