Yesterday we saw Labour leader, Ed Miliband Labour, argue that he will fight the UK's housing crisis by building 200,000 homes a year by 2020 and will aim to free-up councils from planning regulations, penalise developers who hoard land and deliver another wave of new towns.
Former chairman of the BBC trust, Sir Michael Lyons, will lead a housing review for the party. All of this and let’s not forget the commitment to infrastructure spend by the coalition Government is good news for construction.
After all, it is our industry that will – given the right strategy and sufficient time to plan and budget – build Wales and the rest of the UK out of recession and into a strong, sustainable recovery. But what our industry needs and the people who use the facilities it creates to travel, live, work, learn and play and improve their health demands is a clear policy.
Politicians need to listen and engage with construction if they believe so vehemently that our industry is such a major vote winner. But, it is a two way street. Industry has to be willing to share, advise and provide constructive and critical dialogue so ensure the policies are right for everyone and financed properly.
His "rebuilding Britain" commission will work with councils to identify sites for potential development.
