The news that Costain and Vinci have been named as ECI on the £750M M4 upgrade at Newport almost kept politics away from the headlines for while, but nonetheless, this is a significant step forward in what has been a very long running Welsh construction saga. But, the process being pursued should demonstrate the best qualities of our industry and its supply chain – providing the client allows the team they have chosen to apply their expertise.

Can Wales procure, design and build the M4 upgrade at Newport on time and in budget and meeting all Government targets? We are just about to find out.

Wales is one step closer to faster communications between the rest of the UK with the announcement that a joint venture between Costain and Vinci has secured the early contractor involvement deal to deliver the M4 Corridor upgrade around Newport.

Schools represent the future of Wales. So it is vital that we build them right. That is why Government is so keen, not just to invest in the education system, but to make sure any investment generates real value for money. The Minister for Finance and Government Business recently launched a 12 week consultation on proposals for Landfill Disposals Tax which will replace Landfill Tax in Wales from April 2018.

Many of you will be affected by these proposals, whether as waste producers or waste managers or as a community that has benefited through the Landfill Community Fund.
