Kier Construction’s delivery of the Ice Arena Wales is one of the schemes in CEW’s Enabling Zero Waste project. It is being built on a remediated landfill site in Cardiff Bay. The Ice Arena Wales project provides an excellent example of the skills and expertise required to deliver a project whilst ensuring that waste to landfill is maintained as close to zero as possible .
Enabling Zero Waste is a CEW initiative designed to provide practical, positive and active intervention through the provision of professional waste management solutions targeted at four Construction and Demolition projects in Wales. The initiative is exploring the feasibility and viability of a range of solutions aimed at achieving the Welsh Government’s Zero Waste to landfill target. Updates, lessons learnt and best practice will all be disseminated across industry as the project progresses.
The £16.8m Ice Arena Wales, with its two pad ice rink will be a high profile sports arena of its kind in the UK, not just Wales with seating for 3000 spectators. The scheme is a commercial template composite metal and backlit polycarbonate cladding on a trapezoidal steel frame and around 40 people heard an update from Kier this week detailing progress, waste management challenges and highlighting examples of best practice.
According to Paul Jennings, Director of the Construction Waste Programme at CEW said: “In 2010 CEW played a significant part in the preparation of the Towards Zero Waste strategy and was one of the principal players in the compilation of the accompanying construction sector plan, which identified a range of recommendations and actions for the industry. We were delighted to launch and then implement the Enabling Zero Waste project which we hope will help Wales to set an example for the rest of the world.”
“The latest figures released by the Welsh Government suggest that we are already moving in the right direction, with 87 per cent of construction and demolition waste now being recycled. Much work is still needed to reach the initial target of 90 per cent reuse or recycling across every material waste stream generated by the C&D sector in Wales. Flagship projects like the Ice Arena Wales and companies like Kier are vital in helping us to effectively monitor real progress towards the zero waste targets.
