A few weeks ago we talked about how Welsh Local Authorities are seeking to improve C21st School Design and we focussed on the work being done by CLAW. But last week saw the perfect opportunity to learn about what is possible at a workshop put on by the City and County of Swansea to showcase its work at Morriston School. The £22M scheme represents one of the highest priority projects in Swansea's Quality in Education (QEd) 2020 Programme and the Welsh Government 21st Century Schools Programme.

The initiative is not just about building a new school. It seeks to transform learning environments for children and young people while at the same time offering economic regeneration opportunities for the local community. The event last week offered industry colleagues the chance to see a CEW Exemplar project in action via a workshop and tour. Morriston Comprehensive offers a unique opportunity to raise standards across the age and ability range in line with the Welsh Government transformational agenda, while at the same time improving the poor condition of the existing school buildings through the provision of a state of the art teaching facility. Lessons learnt from previous school building projects have driven the client to a more collaborative and integrated approach to project delivery.

The project represents a further step change with greater focus on engagement with the school end users, with the primary objective of raising standards and achieving better educational outcomes. Ed Evans, CEW Director of the Exemplar Programme said: “The high level of interest for this event wasn’t a surprise to me. It was great to hear about the value that a whole team approach brings to addressing the challenges of delivering high educational outcomes at Morriston”
