Construction Politics

New Ministers, a different balance of power and a change in policy emphasis might all be things that impact upon what Welsh construction is asked to build following the announcement of Welsh Government cabinet roles.

As the new Cabinet Secretary for the Economy and Infrastructure, Ken Skates will be tasked with the creation and oversight of a new National Infrastructure Commission, a key demand of Plaid Cymru during the recent talks. He will take control of all transport policy including the construction, improvement and maintenance of the road network and will have to make a decision over future plans for an M4 relief road around Newport.

Julie James as Minister for Skills and Science will lead on apprenticeships, work based learning and sector skills.

Carl Sargeant returns to the Housing portfolio as Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children and will also be leading on strategic regeneration.

Sustainability and waste management goes to Lesley Griffiths as the new Cabinet Member for Environment and Rural Affairs, as does all aspects of building regulations and planning. Mark Drakeford will oversee the National Procurement Service as Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government.
