Title: Building the team – can we learn from the sporting world?

The new Wales National Football Development Centre at Newport, built by ISG and designed by Boyes Rees Architects, underlines the Football Association of Wales’ commitment to delivering a sustainable future for Welsh football.
The centre comprises of world-class training, playing and education facilities as well as headquarters for its coaching and development operation for the Welsh Football Trust.
Following this development the Football Association of Wales were recognised as Client of the Year at Constructing Excellence in Wales 2014 Annual Awards. In November they will represent Wales in this category at the UK Constructing Excellence Awards in London.
So what made this client stand out? Strong leadership and a clear vision combined with a commitment to collaboration were key factors. Add to this the direct involvement with the delivery team, engagement with the community throughout and the creation of a positive environment based on mutual trust.
Here’s one of the delivery team’s comments :
"The client was made in heaven - they knew what they wanted and what they needed. Working tirelessly to achieve their vision, but involving and listening to every member of the team. Truly inspirational"
And all this from a “non-construction” client! What stands out is the way the client used skills, knowledge and behaviours from the sporting world to create and lead a team in a construction environment. To build an asset you need to first build a team and the construction industry has much to learn from these experiences.
At this morning event you will hear from the client, the designers and the constructors and will learn about :
• The client’s vision and how the behaviours and principles from a sporting environment were applied
• How collaborative behaviours were extended across the whole supply chain
• How the community was engaged and involved
• The design process and how long term sustainability was considered
• The build process and how site waste management plans were used
• Lessons learnt
As with all our events you will have an opportunity to quiz the client and delivery team and then we will follow with a tour of the site.
This is a great opportunity to see how we can learn from other sectors.
How to Book: This event is free of charge but you must register in advance. To reserve your place please email CEWales Events stating your full contact details and the names of all delegates wishing to attend.
Non-attendance by any registered delegate will be charged £20 unless you have informed us by Friday 26th September. We confirm numbers to the venue the day before the event and numbers cannot be amended we are charged in full for that amount.
In order to reduce wastage at our events CEW operates a policy of only notifying venue details when issuing registration confirmation. This ensures we only cater for delegates who have registered and don’t over order for individuals who may or may not turn up on the day.

Adeiladu’r Tîm – beth allwn ei ddysgu oddi wrth y byd chwaraeon?
Cyflwyniad a thaith o amgylch Canolfan Datblygu Pêl Droed Genedlaethol Cymru yng Nghasnewydd.
Cafodd Canolfan Datblygu Pêl Droed Genedlaethol Cymru yng Nghasnewydd ei hadeiladu gan ISG a’i dylunio gan y penseiri Boyes Rees. Mae’n dystiolaeth glir o ymrwymiad Cymdeithas Bêl Droed Cymru i sicrhau dyfodol cynaliadwy i bêl droed ein gwlad.
Yno mae cyfleusterau hyfforddi, chwarae a dysgu gyda’r gorau yn y byd ac mae’n bencadlys i’r gwaith hyfforddi a datblygu a wneir ar ran Ymddiriedolaeth Pêl Droed Cymru.
Oherwydd y datblygiad hwn, dewiswyd Cymdeithas Bêl Droed Cymru yn Gleient y Flwyddyn yng Ngwobrau Blynyddol 2014 Adeiladu Arbenigrwydd yng Nghymru (CEW). Yn awr byddant yn cynrychioli Cymru yn y categori yma yng Ngwobrau Adeiladu Arbenigrwydd y Deyrnas Unedig a gynhelir yn Llundain fis Tachwedd.
Pam felly fod hwn yn gleient mor arbennig? Y ffactorau allweddol oedd arweiniad cryf, gweledigaeth glir ac ymrwymiad i gydweithio. Ychwanegwch at hynny y ffordd y buont yn ymwneud yn uniongyrchol â’r tîm adeiladu, yn ymgysylltu â’r cyhoedd trwy gydol y broses ac yn creu amgylchedd positif ar sail cyd ymddiriedaeth.
Meddai aelod o’r tîm gweithredu:
"Dyma gleient delfrydol – yn gwybod beth oedd ei eisiau a’i angen... yn gweithio’n ddi-baid i gyflawni ei weledigaeth, ond yn dwyn i mewn ac yn gwrando ar bob aelod o’r tîm. Ysbrydoledig yn wir.”
A hyn oll gan gleient tua allan i’r maes adeiladu! Yr hyn sydd mor drawiadol yw’r ffordd y defnyddiodd y cleient sgiliau, gwybodaeth ac ymddygiadau’r byd chwaraeon i greu ac arwain tîm prosiect adeiladu. I greu ased, rhaid ichi yn gyntaf greu tîm ac mae gan y diwydiant adeiladu lawer iawn i’w ddysgu oddi wrth y profiadau hyn.
Yn ystod y bore bydd cyfraniadau gan y cleient, y dylunwyr a’r adeiladwyr. Fe ddysgwch am:
• Weledigaeth y cleient a sut y cafodd ymddygiadau ac egwyddorion y byd chwaraeon eu cymhwyso
• Sut y cafodd ysbryd cydweithredol ei ymestyn ar draws yr holl gadwyn gyflenwi
• Sut y meithrinwyd diddordeb a chyfranogiad y gymuned
• Y broses ddylunio a sut yr ystyriwyd cynaliadwyedd tymor hir
• Y broses adeiladu a sut y defnyddiwyd cynlluniau rheoli gwastraff y safle
• Y gwersi a ddysgwyd.
Fel ym mhob un o’n cyfarfodydd, bydd cyfle ichi holi’r cleient a’r tîm gweithredu, ac yna siawns i fynd o amgylch y safle.
Mae’n gyfle gwych i weld beth sy’n digwydd mewn sectorau eraill, a’r gwersi y gallwn oll eu dysgu.
